The Mother-Daughter Stringband is Lyn Hardy & Abby Newton and their daughters Ruth Ungar Merenda & Rosie Newton. Fiddles, cello, guitar, National steel ukelele, banjo and lots of singing of old and new folk repertoire. This Mother's Day Weekend, these four women will be joining forces for a very special series of concerts. They'll be singing great mother-daughter harmonies and playing old-timey, celtic and contemporary tunes that they love.
Brief History:
Lyn and Abby performed and recorded together in the 1970's with John Cohen and Jay Ungar in "The Putnam String County Band." It was in this decade that Ruth was born, into a great old-timey string band resurgence in New York's Hudson Valley. In the 1980's, Lyn moved to Western Massachusetts and toured with the all-female folk band "Rude Girls". At this time Abby began playing Celtic music and touring Scotland and the US with Jean Redpath. That's when Rosie was born and she too was raised on many of the same tunes and lullabies that Ruth had absorbed earlier, like Lyn and Abby's beautiful versions of "Black Jack Davey" and "Turtle Dove."
