The Amigos Return on Sat. Oct. 26th

Quickly becoming a beloved mainstay of the hot New York folk scene, The Amigos present high-energy original music and forgotten gems in bold, genre-busting performances. Behind those matching mariachi shirts are virtuosic musicians and songwriters, delivering the goods in sunny three-part harmony with all the vibe of your uncle’s old ‘45’s. Every Amigos performance careens from bluegrass to blues, from wild-man jazz to honky-tonk, with a "latin tinge," — a testament to the diverse but interconnected origins of American music. Recent highlights include a 3-night run at Dizzy's Lincoln Center, The Blue Note in NYC, The Blue Plate Special Radio show in Knoxville TN, the Mountain Meltdown in Olean, NY, Ashkenaz in Berkeley CA, and numerous outreach, education, and college performances across America.

Hailing from the rolling hills of North Carolina, vocalist/guitarist Justin Poindexter is the descendent of a long line of southern storytellers. His songs and guitar pickin’ have been featured in award-winning films and albums, and in hundreds of venues from Georgia roadhouses to Lincoln Center in New York City. Justin is the recipient of numerous grants for his music research and composition, including grants from the Semans’ Art Fund and the Howard Hanson Institute for American Music.

Recently graduated from Columbia Univeristy vocalist/accordionist Sam Reider is to The Amigos what the green chile is to the tamale. An avid scholar of 30's music, his wild and constantly surprising playing has been lighting up stages all across the country. Originally from San Francisco, in 2007 Sam's voice and keyboard stylings were featured on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz on National Public Radio. Since then he has toured extensively with his own band and released two critically acclaimed recordings. Joining Sam and Justin for this performance are Noah Garabedian on bass and percussionist Will Clark.

The Amigos will perform on Saturday, October 26th beginning at 7:30.

Please RSVP to Sandilion49@gmail.com.

Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem on Saturday, Sept. 28

"A tart, smart meld of American folk melody with buoyant splashes of jazz, pop, bluegrass, and blues." -The Boston Globe
The Jenkins House Concert series is pleased to welcome back Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem to the Upper West Side. All of roots music is a stage for Daisy Mayhem, and this four-piece string band loves nothing more than choreographing a jubilant mix of traditional, original, and contemporary sounds. With Arbo's bewitching alto at the helm, stunning vocal harmonies, a 100% recycled drum set, fiddle, guitar, and bass, daisy mayhem "has a grand knack for pumping new blood into old music" (The Boston Globe). Imagine, for example, a pre-civil war song from the Georgia Sea Islands sung over a New Orleans-style groove. Or, an old Irish fiddle tune with new lyrics, capped with a solo on a South American box drum. A Sondheim tune done jug band style? An original Unitarian funk gospel song? You begin to get the idea. With influences from Doc Watson to Django Reinhardt, from Ghanaian drumming to the funky Meters, and from Fiddlin' John Carson to Bob Dylan, Daisy Mayhem celebrates America's rich musical past and brings it into the present with good humor, impeccable musicianship, powerful songwriting, and a clear love of playing together. Here are four musicians who pick up what's lying around—from tin cans to old songs and wry observations of modern life—and create something new.

Brittany Haas, Paul Kowert, Jordan Tice

This concert is fully reserved as of 6/3/13. See you in September at the start of our 11th season.
Friday, June 14, 2013

Brittany Haas, Paul Kowert, and Jordan TiceBrittany Haas, Jordan Tice, and Paul Kowert are three of the most exciting young voices in acoustic music today. They have each performed at a Jenkins House Concert, but never as this group.

Brittany performed here most recently in  a fiddle duo with Lauren Rioux in February 2013, and with the Brittany Haas/Dan Trueman Band, which released the album Criss Cross in December 2011, also featuring Jordan.

Paul studied bass with Edgar Meyer at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, moved to Brooklyn, and joined the Punch Brothers, whose most recent album, Who’s Feeling Young Now?

Jordan studied music at Towson University while performing and recording with such musicians as Mark Schatz, Frank Wakefield, and Darol Anger. Before graduation, he recorded an album with Wes Corbett and Simon Chrisman that theChicago Tribune named to its Top Five Best Albums of 2008 in bluegrass / newgrass.

Brittany, Paul, and Jordan are all virtuosos on their instruments, but what marks their collaboration is their commitment to learning from each other and creating something new.
