Martin Grosswendt & Susan Salem-Schatz, February 3

Martin Grosswendt and Susanne Salem-Schatz make beautiful music together, with soul that comes from deep within. Together, they explore the highways and byways of American traditional and vernacular music, from pre-war blues, old time and jug band to jazz standards, honky tonk and contemporary gems.  Their fans revel in the powerful mix of genres the duo embraces in their performances, crossing time and space with grace and a touch of wry humor.
Martin is a multi-instrumentalist, internationally known as an inspirational interpreter of pre-war blues and other southern roots music.  His extraordinary instrumental skills are matched by his powerful, soulful vocals.  Musical partner Susanne is a remarkable singer, adding rock solid rhythm, a keen ear for harmony, and dynamic interpretations of songs old and new.  Together they demonstrate the exponential power of two.  Martin and Susanne’s harmonies work magic on songs both sweet and slow and rough and rowdy, with a vocal alchemy that touches listeners deeply.  These musicians were meant to sing together. Martin and Susanne have created strong connections with audiences since they began touring together in 2014.  They recently released their first CD, Old Songs, New Hats.http://www.martingrosswendt.com/martin--susanne.html

We hope you will be there to welcome these two outstanding musicians to their second Jenkins' House Concert. For details and reservations please contact Sandy at Sandilion49@gmail.com.

The Katie McNally Trio on Saturday, January 20th

The Katie McNally Trio

“The new face of Scottish fiddling in the USA" (The Living Tradition), Katie McNally has made waves in both the American traditional music scene and abroad since the release of her debut album, Flourish, in 2013. Based in Boston, her latest project synthesizes her elegant and powerful fiddle playing with the talents of genre-crossing pianist Neil Pearlman and bluegrass phenom Shauncey Ali on viola.

The trio's brand-new album The Boston States reinvigorates and reimagines the historic musical connection between Maritime Canada and the Northeast United States. Under the guidance of producer Wendy MacIsaac (Beolach, Mary Jane Lamond), McNally has curated a collection of tunes that will draw inspiration from mid-century recordings of Cape Breton fiddlers both in Nova Scotia and Massachusetts and be sculpted by the creative energy of the modern Boston acoustic music scene. Recorded at Lakewind Sound Studios earlier this year, the album is slated for release in Summer 2016.

Nimble keyboard work, achingly lush string harmonies, and driving dance tunes define the unmistakable sound of the Katie McNally Trio. For more information, dates, and contact information, visit the website below.

Moira Smiley and Jayme Stone Folklife on January 13th

MOIRA SMILEY + FRIENDS
8:00 PM
Moira threads her powerful voice through original songs and the folk-songs that inspire her. Her guests will be Irish multi-instrumentalist / founder of SOLAS, Seamus Egan, mandolinist / composer / 9 Horses founder, Joe Brent and singer/instrumentalist, Ali Dineen. Moira will also be joined by members of Jayme Stone’s Folklife for her set. Moira will accompany herself on banjo, accordion and piano.

Moira Smiley travels the world as a performer and song collector. Her earliest influences were American shape-note hymnody, Irish and Russian folksongs and the piano music of Bach, Bartók and Debussy. In her late teens, she began traveling to learn songs – sitting at the knees of traditional singers in the UK, Ireland and Europe. She taken her voice, accordion and banjo across the planet, touring with artists like tUnE-yArDs, SOLAS, Billy Childs, The Lomax and Folklife Projects, KITKA, Theatre Of Voices and The Lyris String Quartet. She’s become a well-known choral composer, with millions of singers singing her work worldwide, and premieres including The Los Angeles Master Chorale’s “Lux Aeterna” in The Walt Disney Concert Hall. She’s been featured on BBC Radio 3, at TED Conferences, NPR, PBS and ABC Australia's "Books & Art" program. Moira has received praise from Billboard to Gramophone for her voice and writing.

8:50pm JAYME STONE’S FOLKLIFE:

Jayme Stone - banjo/vocals, Moira Smiley - vocals/accordion, Sumaia Jackson - fiddle/vocals, Joseph Phillips - bass/vocals

Stemming from the Lomax Project, Jayme Stone’s Folklife treats old field recordings not as time capsules, but as heirloom seeds passed down from a bygone generation. Planting these sturdy seeds in modern soil, this versatile gathering of musicians has cultivated vibrant Sea Island spirituals, Creole calypsos, and stomp-down Appalachian dance tunes for contemporary listeners. Their concerts and educational programs are moving, inventive, and participatory experiences that prove folk songs are indeed perennials for the people. The new album is out now on Borealis Records.

Please RSVP to Sandilion49@gmail.com. We are located on the upper west side of Manhattan. Details will follow with your reservation. This concert is sold out. We have standing room only at this point with a cancellation list.
